Last weekend saw the annual Battle of Malta poker tournament take place. This year's event broke the record for the number of entries, with 1,813 players going for the €160,000 first prize.

In total, Guts put 49 players into the mix, made up of Guts Ambassadors, VIPs and members of the team. Knut Mo went deepest, eventually finishing the multi-day tournament in 18th place.

Guts Ambassador Silje Nilsen had a deep run and finished in the money. Silje again proved her potential by also winning one of the 2016 Spirit of Poker Awards. Here she is with her trophy…

Fans worldwide are buzzing over the rumored reunion of legends of rock, Guns and Roses. Having sold over 100 million albums worldwide, it’s an understatement that Slash, Axl and Duffy have an enormous fan base. It's now confirmed that the troubled band will be headlining the 2016 Coachella Festival in March…

There have been hints about the band reuniting here and there for a while and we’re about to present another one to you right here: NetEnt is releasing the Guns N’ Roses Video Slot the 21st of January! Paradise City, here we come! We’ve had a sneak preview of the game, and my, my, my, you’re in for a spectacle!

The intro video sets the tone and as you feel the hairs raise in the back of your neck, you select your favourite Guns N’ Roses song from the Set List (5 classics in the set: Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child O’Mine, Paradise City, November Rain and Chinese Democracy). And then you spin…

The design is just amazing and you get the feeling that you’re at a rock concert, rather than playing a video slot. It almost feels wrong to give you the nuts and bolts of this piece of art, but Guns N’ Roses is actually a fairly basic 5 reel, 3 row, 20 line slot. However, it’s a perfect fit for this one.

The premium symbols feature band members Axl Rose, Slash and Duff (get them in a win and they pop out of your screen!). There are to middle symbols shaped like guitar picks and the lower symbols are the usual suspects 10, J, Q, K A draped in roses.

Now then, here comes all that’s not basic about the slot, and it’s a lot. First of all, there’s a wild symbol. But it’s not just a wild symbol, it freakin’ expands, covering the reel. Hell yeah, baby! There’s also a bonus symbol on reels 1, 3 and 5, but we’ll get back to that. First, let’s take a look at the 3, yes 3 awesome, random features in this slot. Welcome. To the Jungle!

The Appetite for Destruction Wild Feature sends out up to 5 wilds shaped as a cross in the middle of the slot (reels 2-4). It works sort of like the “Beefcake” feature in South Park and is sure to bring a big win! Get a couple of expanding wilds on reels 1 and 5 and it looks like this:

Activate the Legend Free Spins and enjoy 3 free spins! 1st spin: Reel 3 is wild. 2nd spin: Reels 1 and 5 are wild. 3rd spin: Reels 2 and 4 are wild. Legend….wait for it….dary!

Lastly we have the Solo Multiplier, which multiplies your win by 4x-10x. Big Win City!

But there is more! Get Bonus symbols on reel 1, 3 and 5 and unlock the Bonus Wheel which is (of course) a record player. The 3 Bonus Features are Coin Wins, Encore Free Spins and the Crowd Pleaser Feature (point and click). We’ll leave these bonus features in the dark for now, to keep you guessing, but let’s just say they will not disappoint you!

Guns N’ Roses will be launched in the Guts Casino on January 21st. We can’t wait!

Happy Friday!
Deep under the sea lures a mythical beast - and tons of treasure! Get ready for a thrilling, spine-chilling underwater quest in Play’N Go’s Eye of the Kraken.

Play’N Go really outdid themselves with this one. We absolutely love gloomy, daunting soundtrack, the design and the fresh format: 3 reels, 3 rows and 8 lines. That might not sound like much, but trust us: It’s different, it’s retro and it’s awesome! Apart from the 8 pay lines, there’s also 2 position bonuses for getting the same symbol in all corners (10x) and in a “cross” (5x).

The lower case symbols depict boots, an oxygen tank and a harpoon. The middle symbols are a compass and the diving helmet, which is also a scatter. You’ll get paid for scatters, which we love. The high symbols are 3 crewmembers and the torpedo, which plays an important role in this game.

Apart from being the highest paying symbol, the torpedo will get you a huge bonus game, once you’ve collected 50 of them. Battle the Kraken in this point-and-click bonus game and win up to 500 times your bet! There’s 6 treasure chests and you get to choose 3 of them.

Now then, about the diving helmet scatters, you need 5 of them to win 9 free spins. The free spins mode includes a few cool features. First of all, the Eye of the Kraken Wild opens up a world of possibilities, but the real goal is to collect treasure chests. If you get 9 treasure chests, you’ll get a huge 150x your bet!

Finally, there’s the Wild Kraken Tentacles feature which appears randomly, but frequently. Not only is the feature super cool graphically, it potentially covers the board with wilds!

Why Wait? Dive deep under the sea and defeat the kraken! As always here at Guts, added value is just around the corner! We’re running a deposit lottery in October, with €10,000 worth of fantastic prizes. Read more about our October Deposit Lottery here.

Avast, me hearties! Join Captain Hook and his terrible crew, set sail on the seven seas and get ready for all the booty in the world! That’s right, NetEnt’s brand new slot, Hook’s Heroes, is pirate themed! Well, not as much Pirates of the Caribbean as pirate-themed kid’s birthday party, but still, we had to go a little scallywag there. But yeah, the game is more jolly roger than the Black Pearl.

Now, the game is a 5 reel, 3 row, 20 line video slot, so we are more back to basics in that sense. The higher symbols depicts pirate kids and the lower symbols are 10, J, Q, K and A. There’s also a Wild symbol, depicting Captain Hook himself and a corny looking free spin symbol that you will learn to love.

So what makes Hook’s Heroes unique, apart from the jolly pirate theme? You know how frustrating it can be when you hit just 2 scatters? Some slots gives you your bet back or even doubles your bet, but you still don’t get any free spins. Frustrating at length to say the least.

Hook’s Heroes seek to change that, not going all Wish Master on us, but rewarding you with a taste of free spins if you hit 2 scatters. You get 1 Feature Spin with one of three random bonus features. In the Pirate Feature (Arrrg!), wins are calculated by the number of visible symbols on the reels, no lines as such apply! Only downside: No wilds on the reels in this feature. Now, the Mermaid Feature will multiply all wins by 2, unless there’s a wild symbol in your winning combination, which will multiply your wins by 4! The Fairy Feature is perhaps our favourite though, giving you between 2 and 5 overlaying wilds randomly placed!

3 free spin symbols gives you a bunch of free spins. You’ll have to make the choice between the 3 different features. 7 free spins with the Fairy Feature, 10 free spins with the Mermaid Feature and 15 free spins with the Pirate Feature. If you manage to get 4 or even 5 scatters, you’ll get to choose 2 or 3 features. Note that you’ll have to finish 1 round of free spins before choosing the next.

All hands on deck, ye landlubbers! Hook’s Heroes will be live in the Guts Casino on September 23rd! As always, we at Guts are giving you the opportunity to grab a whopping 500 free spins in time for the launch! All you have to do is to play Fisticuffs every day for a week. Read all about the promotion here!

Last Monday, Rafail was playing comfortably on whilst on holiday in Santorini Island. Who knew that the 3 scatter symbols would launch our most profitable free spin feature ever?!

The lucky winner was quoted proclaiming enthusiastically:
“I had always dreamed of winning big on Dead or Alive.. and well finally the dream came true! I think this game is super entertaining and easy to understand too. I simply could not believe my eyes when I saw the parade of wilds on my screen. I had a total of 9 Sticky Wilds on my last free spin round, which contributed to my super mega win. My holiday just got even better and also longer too!  I’ll use my winnings to go to Los Angeles and Las Vegas!”

When we asked him why he chose he said:
“The main reason that I chose 2 months ago is that it’s a legit casino and payments are processed hassle free. Plus the slots are paying out well too, that’s why I’ll always be a loyal player here!”

Way to go Rafail!Congratulations & welcome into the Guts big winner circle! We hope you’ll have a blast in Vegas and we’re looking forward to hear all about this wonderful trip!

Name: ADAC Rallye Deutschland 2015
Dates: 20-23/8/2015
Location: Trier
Distance: 1227 km
Stages: 21

Rally Germany is the first tarmac rally since Monte Carlo. Usually the weather is playing a big role during the rally. There is a mix of everything in this rally, some stages in vineyeards, some in normal tarmac roads and some in military area, like the famous Baumholder, where there is everything you can ever imagine for a stage, normal tarmac, rough/aggressive tarmac, concrete, some gravel even. A real challenge for the drivers. Since 2002 there have only been 3 winners in this rally, Sebastian Loeb won 10 times in a row, then Dani Sordo won 2013 and Thierry Neuville 2014. This is the home rally of Volkswagen, who surely want to win this time, as last year was a nightmare for them.

I have done the rally twice myself, in 2002 I finished 2nd in group N after leading for a longtime, but eventually got a puncture mid rally and just missed out in the end and 2003 I finished 10th overall in a Mitsubishi WRC Step 2. It’s a really an interesting and challenging rally.

What is also different in tarmac rallies is that there is allowed so called Gravel Crew, let me explain that shortly.

Gravel Crew: After drivers have done recce for the stages twice, the notes are copied and a crew, normally also driver and co-driver (who might have stopped carrier) will drive the stages  on the morning before drivers go there. This used to be in all rallies, but these days only in tarmac rallies. Their most important thing is to mark any possible chances there might have come after the drivers have done recce. Especially if there is rain, there might be standing water in the middle of a corner or mud under braking etc.. All this information is crucial to drivers attacking the stages. Their work is really important and they need to know what info the driver really wants and needs and this is talked before naturally. Experienced gravel crew can be a very big help for drivers. Also they give last information to the team about weather, as the tire choice is crucial. There is only two options: hard or soft, so not that hard, but still is as the drivers need to 3-5 stages with the tires and f.ex it might be damp/wet in some area and dry in some. Gravel crews also drive the stages after they have been done once, and then there is even more places to mark, as drivers are cutting corners, so there is gravel/mud etc.. gravel crew need to understand again, what will come in to play and what info driver wants..

My prediction of top 8 in the Germany Rally:
1. Meeke
- Was in very good speed in Finland and also last year in Germany. Needs to get really strong results to keep his seat for 2016. The speed is there but can he handle the pressure?

2. Ogier
- Had a massive crash here last year, but will be very strong. One of the biggest, if not biggest favourite to win here. He has made mistakes during the last 2 years so...

3. Latvala
- His confidence is high again after a great drive in Finland. He managed to beat Ogier with driving. Mentally he is not as strong, but if he can get "under his skin" like he did in Finland, there is a chance.

4. Sordo
- Totally lost in last gravel rallies. He is trying, but maybe trying even to hard. This rally is very important for him as he needs to get results. He has a contract for 2016, but surely if results don't get better his seat might be in doubt.

5. Kubica
- I believe he will be fastest Ford driver, but can he keep it together. If he can there might be a chance for a surprise, but not enough for a win. 3-6.

6. Neuville
- Has been totally lost for last 3 rallies, even if got an OK result in Finland. Outpaced by his young teammate. His confidence is low, but won here last year and he is a very brave driver. Outsider chance.

7. Paddon
- The star of the year so far. After a great result in Sardinia, gained a lot of confidence, team noticed his potential and are giving him a lot of seat time in testing. Not a lot of experience in Germany, but still fighting for 5-8.

8. Ostberg
- Good result in Finland, but tarmac is not his best surface. Will be fighting for points.

Kind rally regards,
Kristian Solberg

Dazzle Me by NetEnt is due to launch in about a week. We’ve had a sneak preview of this gemmy new video slot and buckle up, son! This is a completely new NetEnt experience. Well, actually, sit back, unwind and get ready to be dazzled!

The Dazzle Me soundtrack immediately sets a soothing, chillaxed mood. Imagine you are at a beach club, listening to some electronica with some soft strings here and there. Now then, gameplay-wise, the Dazzle Me format is something we’ve never seen from NetEnt. Get this. 5 reels, 3,4 and 5 rows (!) and 76 lines (!!). Sometimes a picture says it better.

There’s only 6 regular symbols in Dazzle Me. 7’s and Bells make up the high symbols, whereas 4 different gem stones make up the lower tier. In addition there’s a Free Spin symbol that can trigger, yeah you guessed it, free spins. There’s also a Dazzling Wild Reels Feature that occurs randomly. In this feature, 1-5 reels is covered with Wilds. 1 reel is most frequent of course, but imagine covering all 5 reels…Ultimate Win!

The Free Spin Mode is triggered when you get 3 (8 free spins), 4 (12 free spins) or 5 (16 free spins) free spin symbols scattered over the 5 reels. There’s a Linked Reels Feature in the Free Spin Mode, which means reel 1 and 2 and/or reel 3 and 4 is linked, you know, Twin Spin style, which makes the way to big wins that much shorter.

We’re excited as always about this new NetEnt release, and we know you are itching to try this brand new format as well! Therefore, we’re giving you the opportunity to try Dazzle Me 100 timesr for free! Starting Monday 17.08.2015, play 100 real money rounds on Stickers and get 10 free spins on Dazzle Me for the August 24th launch. If you play 100 real money rounds on Stickers every day for a week, we throw in 30 bonus free spins, giving you a total of 100 free spins on Dazzle Me.

The best part: Winnings from free spins are ALWAYS wager free at Guts!

Oh my god, oh my god! Lillian is getting married! And oh my god, oh my god, Microgaming is releasing a brand new slot based on the 2011 Universal movie Bridesmaids™! Get ready to embark on a journey with Annie, Helen and the hilarious characters from the movie. The goal - the wedding of course! If you loved the movie like we did, you have a new video slot favourite right here!

But what can we expect? Perhaps you’ve seen Bridesmaids slots at land-based casinos before and the online version is not going to be a true clone, but there will definitely be some similarities.

The Bridesmaids™ Online Slot has the authentic Vegas feel to it. We’re talking about a 5 reels, 4 rows, 40-lines slot with a jackpot bonus wheel! Boom! Get the cupcake bonus, win big or unlock a possible 4 different bonus games: Friendship Free Spins, Flying High Free Spins, Boutique Bonus and Magic Moments Bonus all gives you big laughs and big wins!

Bridesmaids™ Online Slot will be live in our casino on Wednesday 5th of August! We’ll also be running a promotion where you can win fabulous prizes while playing Bridesmaids™. Stay tuned!

In about a week, NetEnt’s brand new flashy game Neon Staxx is due to launch. We’re going back to the 80s theme wise, as the slot is veiled in a funky synthesizer soundtrack that really sets the energy and atmosphere of the slot. And there’s neon. Flashy, retro, sweet 80s neon. And lots of it. By the way, have you ever heard “Mr. Roboto” by the band Styx? I have a sneaky suspicion the developers at NetEnt have…

The now familiar 5-reel, 4 row, 40-line format is back, after a swift detour back to the roots with Stickers. In other words, plenty of possibilities to snag a big win! The lower symbols are J,Q,K,A as usual (in neon colours of course) and there are 4 high symbols, called Predators and they depict a lion, a cougar, an eagle and a snake. We also have a wild symbol and a scatter.

So the Neon you pretty much get, now here’s the deal about the “Staxx”: Before every spin, one random symbol (the scatter symbol is exempt) is stacked in the Super Staxx feature. If you watch the spinning reels, you can easily see which. That doesn’t mean that said symbol will necessarily land, but boy, when the big symbols do - this happens:

The wild symbol is included in the Super Staxx feature as well, so…YEAH!
The basic gameplay is thusly fairly simple, yet tantalizing. Now, over to more important matters: Scatters! 3 scatters randomly placed awards 10 free spins (4 scatters = 15 fs, 5 scatters= 20 fs). For the duration of the free spin rounds, one predator symbol is Super Staxx-ed. Or if you’re really lucky, the Wild symbol. Then you spin. And win. Grab a Guts bonus and play Neon Staxx today!

neonWe’re absolutely buzzing for the release of Neon Staxx and we’re giving you the opportunity to grab up to 100 free spins for the June 23rd release. Read more about how here.

We at were honored to welcome out first Jackpot winner here in Malta last weekend. The shock of winning the life-changing jackpot had somewhat settled in for our brand new multi-millionaire, but she was again overwhelmed when we presented her with our first Gold coin, reserved only for million euro winners.

Celebrations were naturally in order, so champagne accompanied by the view of the Marsamxett Harbor Marina from our roof-top terrace seemed appropriate, before enjoying a gourmet dinner in beautiful Valletta. We also took Monica on a sightseeing tour of the old cities, Birgu and Senglea. The gorgeous, narrow and winding alleys resembled a scene from Game of Thrones more than a modern capitol.

Winter might be coming, but for our jackpot-winner it will be a pleasant one. At the end of her stay, at an Italian fish restaurant down by the quay at the Birgu Marina, we finally got the confirmation that all formalities were taken care of. Tears of joy were shed when Monica called her bank and heard her account balance.

We were very happy to have had the opportunity to celebrate with our first multi-millionaire. Guts wishes Monica all the best and we hope to soon be able to award another Jackpot winner with a Gold coin., turns 2 years old this month and will be celebrating its birthday in style with a generous €35,000 giveaway. Robin Reed, CEO of said: “We’ve enjoyed an amazing two years and it wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for all our customers. We think the €35,000 birthday bash giveaway is the best way to say thank you.”

He added: “we are always looking for ways to keep our players happy and have some very exciting plans for the next few months, including a move to our new gaming platform,”, which will greatly enhance the game performance and overall user experience at have also invited their first ever millionaire to join in with the celebrations. Monica scooped the Arabian Nights jackpot prize of €2,633,052 in the early hours of 23rd April 2015.

The team wanted to make her massive win that little bit more special by making her their honorary birthday guest. They will be flying her out to party at HQ to enjoy the sights and sounds of Malta.

“We love to celebrate winners at Guts,” said Reed. “This is the largest win we have ever had the pleasure of celebrating. We are so happy for Monica, who has been playing at Guts since the start, and we look forward to making more millionaires in the future.”

In the early morning hours, more precisely at 3:47am on the 23rd of April, most people in Sweden were sleeping. However, one person was busy becoming first ever millionaire and with a click of the spin button she won the Arabian Nights jackpot worth €2,633,036. A shocking amount of money to most people, especially if you didn’t realize you won and some guy from calls you in the morning with some rather astonishing news…

The team at Guts could not wait to call Monica to congratulate her on the massive jackpot win, but Monica’s initial reaction was not what Guts was expecting. It seems that Monica saw the five wild symbols lined up and thought she had won something. Yet, she did not realize the immensity of her win, so she continued to play some more spins and then went to bed. Little did she know that she had just become a millionaire. So our Swedish speaking representative’s phone call with our winner the morning after went something like this:

“Hi! I’m calling from Guts”

“I’m calling you from, do you know why I’m calling?”

“Whe, wha…No…why are you calling me?”

“(soft laughter) Well, you played a few rounds at Arabian Nights last night?”

“Oh, yeah, that’s right! Guts, yes. But why are you calling?”

“(more laughter) We got a message from NetEnt that a jackpot was won on that slot last night, and it’s your account. You won!”

“Did I win a jackpot last night? Really?! Well, how much was it?”

“It was quite a bit actually, are you sitting down?”

“You won the big jackpot of €2.6 million! Or almost 24.5 million Swedish Kroner!”

“I can’t believe it! You are kidding me, right?”

After some more convincing that we were in fact serious and that she really had won the jackpot, Monica’s pulse started racing and she burst out “I think I might have a heart attack” And finally when the news started to sink in: “I think I may faint!” No need to worry though, Monica is in good health, but the winner’s high will not soon be forgotten! We can just imagine the rush of being told you’ve won life-changing money early in the morning!

Robin Reed, Managing Director of comments: “This is truly a remarkable day. We love to celebrate winners at Guts and this is the largest win we have ever had the pleasure of celebrating. We are so happy for Monica, who has been playing at Guts since the start and we look forward to making more millionaires in the future. Well done, Monica!”

We had to ask what Monica would be doing with the winnings, to which she replied: “I will pay off my mortgage, help out my children and my grandchildren, donate some money to charity and then enjoy a little travelling with my family.”

As the Premier League is entering its final phase, so is the Guts Fantasy League. It’s gut-check time for our managers, but there’s still two more months of action left. Remember, you only need 1 good month to be a winner in our Fantasy League! Speaking of which, here’s a couple of lads that did really well in March:

1 Multiple Scorgasms - Paul Scotland 238 - £80

1 biz utd - Jagdeep Birring 238 - £80

3 Chorlton Athletic - Daniel Morehead 229 - £40

Cheeky chop for 1st this month! Congrats to our winners in March! They must email, subject line “Fantasy” and include team name and user name at Guts within 14 days to claim their prizes. Only a few more game weeks to go now! Get in!

Yesterday’s big game at Anfield was a cracker. Liverpool snubbed City’s title ambitions with two amazing goals. Speaking of titles, Chelsea got their first of the season beating Tottenham 2-0 in the Capital One Cup final at Wembley. That game made it difficult for a lot of you Fantasy Managers out there, but at least we can look forward to double points for Spurs and QPR this next round. Hurry up though, we have mid-week action in the Premier League ahead!

Up top in our Guts Gaming Fantasy League, it’s getting ever tighter. Tiago Neto with his Control Alt Da Laet still holds the pole position, disregarding the Scandic in 1st.. Kamil and James Currie currently trails only a few points behind with 11 game weeks to go.

February’s Managers of the Month:

                1             Golden Furryballs           Dan Furneaux                   246p      £100

3            Nice to Michu                   Gillian Rae                         231p      £40

As always, our monthly winners must contact within 14 days to redeem their prizes. Well played to all our Fantasy Managers and again, remember to set up your team before Tuesday!

Atop the Premier League the gap is still there, don’t get me wrong, but as Chelsea fumbled at home against Burnley, Manchester City grabbed the opportunity to narrow the gap to 5 points. That is still a lot, especially when you’re playing catch up with Mourinho and his star-studded cast. However, City’s 5-0 dismantling of Newcastle was convincing, and even Edin Dzeko scored a fantastic goal.

The Special One was a Grumpy One after Chelsea dropped 2 points, not arguing with Matic’s sending off, but citing 4 situations where he felt Chelsea lost the game due to poor refereeing, though that last part was discretely veiled. More like hidden in plain sight, but that’s Mourinho’s game these days.

Next up for Chelsea is the Capital One Cup final against Tottenham. Back on New Year’s Day, Spurs and their HurriKane blew Chelsea away with a 5-3 win at White Hart Lane, but Spurs looked shady this weekend against London-rivals West Ham. Eventually they escaped with a lucky point after said Kane was given a soft penalty deep into stoppage time. A final at Wembley is always something special though, but Spurs are big underdogs. Can they provide the 15/4 upset?

Speaking of next Sunday, Liverpool will face Manchester City in their ever-promising quest for a Champions League spot. Yesterday they closed the gap with their away-win against Southampton, sitting just 3 points behind Arsenal in third. Coutinho’s early screamer set up a hard fought victory, although Saints had a few valid penalty appeals throughout the match.

As it stands now, we have a 5 team race on our hands for 2 Champions League spots. Of those 5, the Gunners are the only ones left in this year’s campaign. We have to say Arsenal was a bit lucky to escape with all 3 points on Saturday, as Crystal Palace made a proper late run for it. However, Glenn Murray could only hit the post off Bolasie’s astonishing cross 5 minutes into stoppage time.

Rest today, and enjoy the Champions League matches in mid week. Next weekend will be awesome. Sunday Funday!

It was written in the stars. It was bound to happen. It was him. It was always going to be him.

Mario Balotelli, with his first Premier League goal for Liverpool, capped off a true spectacle at Anfield last night. After 82 minutes he showed up in the box and slotted home Lallana’s perfect low cross to break the deadlock. A fairytale ending to a magnificent night of football. Make your betting week a fairytale by grabbing the next Guts sports promotion right now!

Last night’s game was a huge one for Liverpool. They basically had to win to stay in the top four flight and the reds came out attacking. Daniel Sturridge had several good opportunities, but looked rusty in his finishing. However, he was a constant threat and after 15 minutes he laid off a long clearance to Lazar Markovic who in turn strolled through the Tottenham defense and scored a low shot across Hugo Lloris. On a better day, Lloris would’ve pushed that shot aside, but the goal stood.

Tottenham on their hand definitely came to play with a Hurri-Kane on fire. Spurs utilized Liverpool’s high pressure and embroidered themselves through after 26 minutes. And who else but ‘Arry finished off that class attack. 1-1 at Anfield. Sturridge’s cheeky back heel hit the post just before half time, but after the intermission, Liverpool were at it again. Flair youngster Jordan Ibe found Sturridge in the box and Ryan Mason fouled him. Penalty. Gerrard. 2-1 Liverpool.

However, Tottenham was not about to go down easy. First Lamela fired a cracker towards goal, forcing Mignolet to make a stunning save. The Belgian made another decent save from Christian Eriksen’s free kick minutes later, but could do nothing as Kane picked up the rebound and played in Dembele who scored. The appeals for offside was not to be heard and Spurs were level once again.

Sturridge was then brought off, Balotelli came on and the rest is, as they say, history. What a goal. What a game.

Elsewhere Arsenal barely held on against Leicester, QPR grabbed their first away points of the season and even Hull claimed a win. Tonight part 2 of the 25th episode of the Greatest Show on Earth will air with Stoke to beat Manchester City at a cool 5.00 at Guts. Tune in!

We thought we were in for a couple of epic derby encounters this weekend and we got value for our money in the North London derby at least. Spurs’ starlet and one of the hottest players in the Premier League at the moment, Harry Kane scored two poacher’s goals to upset Arsenal at White Hart Lane. Can Liverpool stop the Hurri-Kane tomorrow night?

The Merseyside derby wasn’t really all that. Quite disappointing to the crackers we’ve seen between the reds and blues the last couple of seasons, actually. Everton did not look a threat until Ross Barkley came on and Liverpool, well, they struggle with the finishing skills of Sterling. One positive Liverpool has to take from the goalless draw was the performance by 19-year old Jordan Ibe at right wing. Don’t be surprised to see Ibe frequent that position in the games to come.

Elsewhere in the premiership, bottom-placed Leicester could not find the net at home against Crystal Palace. Ledley secured the winner for Palace on a rare opportunity after a corner, but the big talking point after the match was Leicester manager Nigel Pearson and his scrap with James McArthur. Pearson was tripped on the sideline and appeared to almost put a chokehold on McArthur afterwards. This might have been the last we get to see by Pearson in the Premier league. At least for now.

Affordable yes, but Nugent missed a couple of sitters this weekend

This round also saw the return of Fergie-time goals as both Manchester United, Manchester City and Southapton grabbed overtime goals. Saints win away at QPR was a massive one, although perhaps not deserved. Still in third place, Southampton, and we’re still looking for them to fall from grace. It might not happen as they bounced straight back from their defeat against Swansea. They face West Ham at home on Wednesday night as big favourites.

Make sure you’ve set up your Fantasy team in time and enjoy the next episode of The Greatest Show on Earth! Tune in tomorrow night at 20.45 CET.

January is done and dusted and in our Guts Gaming Fantasy League things are really picking up. Some strange events this first month of 2015, most notably we have a new overall leader. Sholashow? manager Sindre Askeland, who might need to review the terms and conditions, has dethroned Tiago Neto with Kamil Rukiewicz sitting in third.

As for the Managers of the Month in January, said mr. Rukiewicz had an astonishing month, racking up 305 points and our top prize of a free bet worth £100.

1.  AR - Kamil Rukiewicz 305  -£100
2.  TheOxGooner - Andy Sides 303 - £60
3. Sport - Guts Sports 280
4.  Borussia Jutland - Joel Stein 280 - £40

You will notice that our Sports department had a sensationally lucky month scooping third place in January. However, the honor of making the podium is reward enough for our secret manager, so Joel Stein will receive the entire third place prize. Winners must email with their team name and username to receive their prizes.

Make sure you have you come prepared for the upcoming Gameweek! With numerous suspensions and injuries, this might be a good time to use your wildcard, if you haven’t already!

The transfer window closes at midnight and although speculations have been wild as usual in the press, it seems midnight will come and pass without the biggest surprises. However, Andre Schürrle from Chelsea to Wolfsburg and Juan Cuadrado coming in as replacement looks to go through in time.

Speaking of Chelsea, on Saturday the Blues faced Manchester City in an early season finale in the Premier League. Despite a fierce start to the game and both teams scoring in the first half, it eventually became abundantly clear that Mourinho would settle for a point. And he got it of course. The gap still remains at 5 points.

In the battle for the Champions League spots, Southampton disappointed and lost 1-0 to Swansea on Sunday. Gary Monk’s game plan worked to perfection and was crowned by a screamer of a winner from Jonjo Shelvey. Manchester United and Arsenal both won as expected, as did Spurs. West Bromwich was very unlucky not to score in that game, much thanks to Hugo Lloris’ magnificent performance.

Speaking of magnifivent, our promotions page is booming right now, so get your Guts promo codes and start winning!

On Anfield, a much-expected return was sweetened by a clinical signature finish and a 2-0 win. Liverpool has missed Daniel Sturridge in the first half of the season, but he’s back to make an ever stronger looking Liverpool contenders for the vital 4th place.

No Monday Night Football tonight, but I guess the excitement that is Deadline Day will be enough. There are some FA Cup replays to look forward to though, and next weekend is Derby Weekend! Stay tuned.

The 4th round of the FA-cup was played this weekend and usually we would not pay much attention to it. Usually the big teams slaughter the smaller teams and usually there’s not much excitement. Well, there was nothing usual about this weekend’s round of FA cup matches, let me tell you that.

It started off on Friday, when the mighty Manchester United only managed to draw 0-0 against League 2 side Cambridge United. A huge achievement for the underdogs, who were facing extinction a few years ago. Now, the club’s economy is virtually saved, as Cambridge will receive their share of the ticket sales of the replay at Old Trafford. A million quid is a lot for a League 2 side, mind you.

Saturday was even stranger. First off, 10-men Swansea was knocked out by Blackburn. But that upset wasn’t really that huge. Championship sides pack a decent punch. Just ask Manchester City who shockingly lost 2-0 at home to Middleborough.

But the huge upset came at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea seemingly held a comfortable 2-0 lead against League One side Bradford. But the Bantams had no intentions of going down easy and shocked the football world by scoring 4 goals and in one of the biggest upsets in FA cup history knocked out Chelsea. Mourinho was fuming after the game, but found it in him to be happy for AFC Bradford. Pure class.

OK, the big sides uses these games to slightly rotate in their squad players, but still. Liverpool should be able to beat Bolton at Anfield. Wanderers’ goalkeeper Adam Bogdan would not have it and secured a 0-0 draw and a replay for Bolton. He is now linked to Liverpool…

Speaking of which, tomorrow there’s another cup-drama to look forward to as Chelsea hosts Liverpool in the Capital One Cup semifinal second leg. The game at Anfield was a cracker, but although Liverpool created the chances, the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Advantage Chelsea, to say the least.

Liverpool to qualify currently stands at 3,43 @ Can they too manage an upset or will Chelsea bounce back?

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Kevin Mirallas steal the penalty yesterday. And from my fantasy captain, none the less?! He had to miss, it was written in the stars. The experts lashed out at him as everyone wished they could’ve heard the half time team-talk in the Everton dressing room. After the game though, which was one of the most boring experiences of my life, manager Martinez said that there was no drama involved as Mirallas was taken off at half time. I guess we have to believe him.

Let’s just forget this week’s edition of Monday Night Football, shall we? Arsenal beat City on Sunday! Who would’ve thought…Well, I have to say that the crucial penalty given at the Etihad was SOFT at best. Monreal went down rather theatrically. Anyways, City did not deserve to win, and that means Chelsea have a 3 point cushion atop the Premier League. They DID deserve to win their game against Swansea. Such quality, such beautiful football.

Southampton still looks strong as Ronald Koeman brought in fellow Dutchman Eljero Elia who in turn secured a victory at Newcastle. And what about Crystal Palace’s epic turn around at Turf Moor? Alan Pardew-effect, much?

Tonight, Liverpool take on Chelsea in the semi-final of the Capital One Cup. Can Liverpool provide an upset or will Chelsea continue their steamrollin’ season?

NFL Football

The NFL is down to its final four teams. The Indianapolis Colts win at Denver Sunday night set the conference championship games. The New England Patriots, in the AFC Championship for the fourth straight year, will play host to the Indianapolis Colts. In the NFC matchup, the Green Bay Packers travel to Seattle to play the defending Super Bowl champions at the loudest sports venue in the USA.

With the Colts having defeated the Broncos, the advantage in the AFC game goes to #1 seed New England Patriots. The Patriots had a bye during the Wild Card week while the Colts had to play, New England is playing this game at their home field, and the Patriots bring much more playoff experience. With that said, the Colts went into Denver this past weekend and beat them convincingly so Indianapolis certainly has momentum and confidence going into this game.

As far as the NFC matchup, Seattle features the league’s best defense squaring off against the Packers and the NFL’s best quarterback, Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers has been hampered by a calf injury that has limited his mobility, yet he can make up for his inability to scramble with his arm strength and accuracy. Despite being hobbled last weekend, Rodgers the Packers back from a halftime deficit to advance to the NFC Championship game. Can Rodgers deliver for a second straight week against a more dangerous defense or will the Seahawks show why they, and not the Packers, are the defending champions?

The NBA’s landscape is changing

Every year, there are basketball teams that improve while other fall short of expectations. This isn’t exclusive to the NBA, but the shift this year has been remarkable. Nearly every division has seen significant differences in the standings over years past. Golden State, while a good team last year, is dominating everyone right now. An improvement was expected but, at 29-5, this pace is reminiscent of historic Bulls and Spurs teams. Atlanta (28-9) is another team that was expected to improve but they now hold the best record in the Eastern Conference.

Part of the shift is teams not playing up to expectations. The Thunder, despite some injuries, is a disappointing 18-19 in a division where that record is good for 2nd place. Cleveland is 19-19 at the moment. When LeBron James returned, he said it might take some time to build a winner in Cleveland. However, that was before the Cavs signed Kevin Love and expectations most certainly changed at that point.

Perhaps it’s too early to make any solid judgments. We’ve seen teams have greatly improved regular seasons only to fall to the usual suspects like San Antonio come playoff time. Teams like Cleveland may get their act together and start playing quality ball. Regardless, it’s an exciting time for a handful clubs that had been consistent losers for many years. They’ll get their chance to prove if they are contenders in just a few short months.

The Premier League is fiercer than ever. There are no easy games unless you play QPR at home (0-0-10 away). Hull also look really poor at the moment with a couple of devastating injuries up front being all they took from their away game at The Hawthornes. Red-hot January transfer-target Berahino slotted home the winner after a hopeless back pass by El Mohammady resulting in an indirect free kick and eventually the crucial goal.

Another piping hot striker on form is Charlie Austin. His penalty was not enough for QPR at Turf Moor though. Scott Arfield’s 1-0 goal following a double nutmeg was the play of the day indeed. In the bottom half of the table, 9 teams are technically struggling against relegation, from bottom placed Leicester to Everton in 12th. The gap is only 5 points, with Leicester upsetting Aston Villa on Saturday. Villa had most of the ball, but Leicester created the chances. David Nugent missed two sitters before rocking the crossbar with a crackling volley. Paul Konchesky hammered home the winner eventually, unlikely as that may sound, in a cracking match that also saw Matthew James sent off after a shocking tackle and Clark joining him receiving his second yellow for his reaction.

The Toffees on their side gave reigning champions Manchester City a run for their money in another great Premier League game. Chances galore, controversial decisions and a draw in the end. Speaking of the top sides, it’s basically come down to a race between City and Chelsea, the latter snagging a 2 point cushin with their win over Newcastle. Costas 2-0 goal was magnificent, much thanks to brilliant moves by Eden Hazard and Oscar. Toon played really well though, and perhaps deserved to get something from the game, but Mourinho’s disciples are relentless this season.

Don't forget next week's matches! Grab your Guts sport bonus and get in!

Hot like a pistol? Try Alexis Sanchez. He is to Arsenal what Luis Suarez was to Liverpool last season and sort of similar in style as well. The Chilean was too much to handle for Stoke yesterday, and almost singlehandedly won the game with 2 goals and an assist. Another praised player this season has been Southampton’s assist-king Dusan Tadic. Manager Ronald Koeman benched him against Manchester United though, only to see the talented Serbian smash home the winner as a sub. Luis van Gaal was delighted to see his squad in full force having struggled with injuries most of the season, however, United’s performance against the Saints was not what the doctor ordered.

21 games played and nothing is settled. Will the teams behind catch up to Chelsea and City? Who will contest the Champions League spots? And who will face relegation battle? Tune in next week for another episode of The Greatest Show on Earth!

Manchester United - Liverpool is the game the supporters love to win and hate to lose. It’s one of the biggest games on the Premier League schedule every year and Liverpool’s 3-0 win at Old Trafford last season was not accepted. David Moyes is no longer the manager of Man Utd, is he? Yesterday, United got even, flattering themselves with a 3-0 win. However, Liverpool created more than enough chances, but David De Gea was like a wizard between the posts. Nothing passed. A magnificent game by the Spaniard and up front United was utterly efficient. Valencia, who played perhaps his best game of the season, created the 1-0 goal which Rooney converted.

Mata’s 2-0 goal was clearly offside, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles when your on the winning path. On an opposite path, Sterling could not find a way pass De Gea, neither could Balotelli. Liverpool was not to get a goal at Old Trafford this afternoon; it was written in the stars. Or at the very least, in the palm of David De Gea’s hand. 6 consecutive wins has propelled United into third place, trailing city rivals Manchester City by 5 points.

The Guts bonus sports is now up and running. Go get'em! City and leaders Chelsea won their games as well on Saturday, securing the status quo going into the busy Christmas schedule. Southampton however, is on a downward spiral having lost 4 games in a row. Dusan Tadic missed a penalty in their 1-0 defeat at Turf Moor, taking Burnley clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham stole a win at Swansea and Arsenal dismantled high-flying Newcastle at the Emirates. Olivier Giroud’s return might spell doom for a Liverpool in a state of crisis next weekend.

Everton and QPR will wrap up Matchweek 16 in the Premier League tonight and the Toffies are expected to win. Monday Night Football usually has an unpredictable atmosphere, so look for the unexpected to happen and Joey Barton to prove why he, not Lewis Hamilton, is the top dog in Britain.

With only three weeks remaining in the NFL’s regular season, let’s take a moment and look at the playoff picture and the teams most likely to win the big game on February 1, 2015. Have another moment and check out the Guts bonus sports! Surely worth a look!

The top two teams in each conference receive a bye week during the first week of the playoffs (Wild Card round).  As these top seeds have the easiest road to the Super Bowl, we’ll focus on those clubs this week.

 nfl stand

New England Patriots, 10-3, Current #1 seed in AFC

The Patriots bring a ton of experience to the conversation.  The Patriots are led by three-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Tom Brady who continues to play at high level in his 15th year in the league.  In recent seasons, the defense was this team’s Achilles’ heel.  The addition of free agent cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner has stabilized New England’s secondary and the defense as a whole.

Working against the Patriots is the lack of a consistent running game.  As the winter months approach and the weather deteriorates, running the ball is increasingly important.  This team has had flashes, but there is no running back on that roster that could be seen as a reliable option.  You can never count out New England though.  We’ve seen them make the Super Bowl in the past with less than impressive rushing attacks.

Denver Broncos, 10-3, Current #2 seed in the AFC

The Broncos, last year’s AFC representative in the Super Bowl, are playing like they haven’t missed a beat.  After their defense was exposed in that Super Bowl, the Broncos went out in the offseason and acquired top line defensive players Demarcus Ware, Aqib Talib, and T.J. Ward.  Denver also used its 2014 1st round draft pick on a defensive back.

Further, the Broncos may have recently discovered a gem in running back C.J. Anderson.  Undrafted in 2013, Anderson has run for at least 150 yards in two of the last three games.  If the Broncos are able to get that sort of production from Anderson in January, they are going to be hard to beat.  The Broncos already feature, arguably, the greatest quarterback ever to put on a uniform in Peyton Manning.  Adding a potent running game to this Broncos team will create a two-headed monster that will be impossible to contain.

Arizona Cardinals, 10-3. Current #1 seed in NFC

Arizona got off to a hot start at 9-1 on the backs of terrific defense and a fairly effective offensive attack.  Unfortunately for the Cardinals, they lost their starting quarterback, Carson Palmer, a few weeks ago for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury.  Since that injury, Arizona has dropped two of the last three games at a time when other NFC teams are surging.

The Cardinals did themselves a huge favor this past Sunday by beating a good Kansas City Chiefs team.  While showing they can still hang in there against quality NFL competition, the absence of quarterback Carson Palmer is probably going to be too big of a hurdle to overcome.  With the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks hot on their tail in the division, there is no guarantee this Cardinals team even makes the playoffs let alone a Super Bowl.

We’ve seen teams win a Super Bowl without a great quarterback in the past, but those teams did so with defenses that were outright dominant.  While the Cardinals field a very good defense, they aren’t so good as to carry them throughout an entire playoff race.

Green Bay Packers, 9-3, Current #2 seed in the NFC

At the time of this article’s writing, the Packers have yet to play a Monday night home game against Atlanta.  We fully expect the Packers to be sitting at 10-3 on Tuesday morning.

Green Bay is perhaps the hottest team in the NFL.  Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is in the prime of his career and making a strong case that it is he, and not Peyton Manning, that is the best quarterback in the league. While there are different schools of thought in that debate, what isn’t up for argument is the fact that Rodgers can make throws that no other quarterback in the league can manage.  His ability to escape pressure and throw accurately on the run is unmatched in the NFL.

If Green Bay has a weakness, it’s on the defensive side of the ball.  The Packers defense isn’t bad, but they aren’t winning games on their own either.  If Aaron Rodgers has a bad game, the Packers are pretty much doomed.  However, as Rodgers is a very consistent player, poor outings are few and far between.

As far as momentum goes, Green Bay has it right now.  If they are able to capture that #1 seed, they will have the home field throughout the playoffs in freezing Green Bay, Wisconsin.  If that happens, this gives Green Bay a huge advantage playing in those conditions.  Not only are they used to it, but also the Packers feature a big bruising running back in Eddie Lacy whose style is perfectly suited to those conditions.

The familiar cry from the crowd was duly heard across the Premier League this weekend. Newcastle’s Steven Taylor was the first one off picking up his second yellow card after 81 minutes in Saturday’s early clash against Chelsea. Toon held a flattering 2-0 lead at that point, thanks to substitute Cisse’s clinical finishing. Unbeatable Chelsea had their chances, by all means, but lacked a final product before Drogba headed home a Fabregas free kick. However, Toon army served Mourinho his first Premier League defeat of the season nonetheless.

Charlie Austin has been of fire as of late and was extremely vital to Ranger’s 2-0 win over Burnley. However, after serving up an assist and a goal, he was sent off. QPR held on though and we have to give some credit to Robert Green who made a couple of astonishing saves.

Nobody looks forward to Stoke away, and Arsenal felt why on Saturday. Bojan is in fantastic form and was a significant factor to Stoke’s 3-0 half time lead. Arsenal scored twice in the second half, but when Chambers was shown his second yellow the uphill battle became too steep. The Gunner’s fans were NOT happy with Wenger as he boarded the train back to London.

On Sunday the red cards flew once again as Fabianski clipped Sakho on his way through and Konchesky was sent off at Villa Park. Andy Carroll headed West Ham to victory and Alan Hutton of all people secured three points for Aston Villa.

On a controversial note, Mangala could’ve been sent off against Everton kicking Etoo in the spine. A yellow card was shown and moments later Milner went down in the area. The soft penalty was converted by Yaya Toure and City closed the gap to Chelsea by three points. However, Aguero picked up an injury and is out for about a month. How will city cope without their top striker?

That’s the name of the dominant force in our Fantasy League for the past few months now, Control Alt Da Laet. Thiago Neto and his quick fix team is in the lead with 779 points. Behind follows Kamil Rukiewicz with his team AR and Daniel Sauerwein and his team FC Banana Phone (lol).

Arsenal is back on track after 2 straight defeats in the Premier League at the hands of Manchester United and Swansea. In mid-week they defeated a crisis-struck Dortmund in the Champions League and this Saturday Arsene Wenger’s lads grabbed three points at the Hawthornes. West Brom away is not the easiest of matches but Arsenal was dominant. However, they took their sweet time before Dat Guy Welbs headed home the winner. Berahino came close to snagging a point, but his header off Gamboa’s cross ricocheted off the bar.

And wouldn’t you know, even Liverpool won this weekend! Even more surprising was the sacrifice shown by whipping boy Glen Johnson as he headed home a rebound. Liverpool was pretty unspectacular and Bojan could well have sent Stoke ahead, but his shot cannoned back off the post.  Liverpool face Leicester away tomorrow and will have to put in an effort to get anything from that game.

Joe Cole had a brilliant game on the Villa midfield against newcomer Burnley. His goal was not enough to secure the victory as Danish defender Okore brought down Jutkiewicz and red hot Danny Ings converted the penalty with ease. Piping hot as well as always is the latest Guts sports promotion. Don't miss out!

Swansea only managed a draw at home against Crystal Palace, despite Gylfi Sigurdsson’s best efforts. West Ham beat Newcastle and QPR grabbed a win at home against Leicester, much thanks to Charlie Austin. Manchester United dismantled a very poor Hull at Old Trafford as the Tigers gave away three goals, not taking away anything from top-class finishing by Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.

Sunderland managed to stop the Chelsea-train, holding the would-be champions to a goalless draw. Connor Wickham and Adam Johnson even had chances to steal the victory, but they lacked a finishing touch.

On Sunday, Tottenham beat Everton thanks to a Danish rebound and a rare goal by Soldado. Kevin Mirallas gave Everton the lead with a screamer, but Spurs turned it around before half time. Earlier that day Manchester City pulverized Southampton by 3 goals to nil. Saints failed their first big test after their stunning opening to the season and Arsenal away on Wednesday might see Koeman’s men struggling again.

The Premier League continues tomorrow and we’ll even sort out who’s Manager of the Month in November in our Guts Gaming Fantasy League. Stay tuned!

Odell Beckham, Jr. Remember that name.

On May 8th of this year, the New York Giants selected wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft.  Of all the top receivers in this year’s draft class, Beckham was perhaps the most unheralded of the group.  This lack of attention caused many Giants fans to question this pick.  Beckham’s training camp injuries kept him sidelined for the first few games of this season further irritating many fans.

Well, those disgruntled fans are eating their words at this point in the season.  Odell Beckham Jr. has been, by far, the Giants best receiver this year.  On Sunday night, however, Beckham cemented himself into NFL legend.  On the first play from scrimmage in 2nd quarter of the Giants game versus the Cowboys, Beckham caught what might be the most amazing catch in NFL history.  It’s certainly the catch of the year, maybe the decade, and it’s hard to remember another catch that comes close in skill and difficulty.  Talking about it doesn’t do it justice, see for yourself:

College Football Playoff

2014 marks the first year of the College Football Playoff.  In previous years, the teams that played in college football’s championship game was decided by a group of sport’s writers who rank the teams based on factors such as record, strength of schedule, and points margin.

This system was roundly criticized as favoring the major football programs.  Sports writers are human beings and they tend to defer to the major football programs when the ranking criteria are close.

One reason there isn’t a full playoff schedule like in the NFL is because the fact remains that these players are still at university and December is an important time for school exams.  On the other hand, college football is a major source of income for these universities and a compromise has been in the works for years.

Finally, after years of dickering and even President Obama calling for a college playoff system, one was finally implemented for this year.  While it won’t have the same length as professional sports, this four-team playoff does make things a bit more competitive and fair for all.  While the system isn’t perfect, allowing four teams to compete rather than two just about ensures that any team deserving of the #1 spot will get a chance to compete for the championship.

While no system is perfect, this new playoff system should serve to avoid most future situation is which an undefeated team from a major conference does not get a bid to compete for the championship.

The college football playoff kicks off on January 1st and, like all other major sporting events, will be listed on the sports book.

As we welcome in Week 12 in the NFL regular season, a lingering issue with the current playoff format looks to be materializing once again. With a 4-6 record, the Atlanta Falcons now sit in first place in their division, the NFC South. With only six weeks remaining in the regular season, there is fairly reasonable shot that a team will win the NFC South with an 8-8 or even a 7-9 record. If this happens, this will no doubt fuel a controversy this offseason as there will be a handful of 9 and 10-win teams that will not make the postseason.

Arguments in favor of the current system

Proponents of the current playoff format argue that every division should be represented in the playoffs. The typical reasoning behind this is that teams will naturally beat up on one another and drag down their win-loss record.

Another argument in favor of the current system is the fact that, because teams only play 16 games in a season, they don’t play each other enough to rely simply on the win-loss record. They argue that the strength of schedule varies so much and that granting a playoff spot to the division winners helps mitigate that unbalance.

Fans who favor the current system often point to the 2010 Seattle Seahawks who won their division with a 7-9 record and went on to beat the New Orleans Saints, 11-5 at the time, during their Wild Card playoff matchup.

Arguments against the current system

Unlike the NBA where half of the teams make the playoffs, the NFL has just 12 playoff spots for 32 teams. The strongest argument made by opponents of the current playoff format is that only the best teams in the conference should get into the playoffs. In a format where so few teams make the postseason, allowing a team with a losing record to advance certainly irritates many fans of the game. There is a very simple argument to be made that allowing mediocre teams into the postseason makes the playoffs less competitive.

Opponents of the divisional system also question the notion that better divisional competition drags the records down. The 2010 NFC West and the 2014 NFC South does not meet any reasonable standard as being highly competitive. Opponents point to the 2013 AFC West in which three out of the four teams made the playoffs as evidence that good division play does not hurt a team’s chances of making the playoffs.

The realities of the system and possible change on the way

In the end, the current format has as much to do with making money as it does with respecting the divisional matchups. If a division were not guaranteed a playoff spot, it would make every late season game in a bad division meaningless. Certainly, if it wasn’t for the playoff spot, most casual fans would have no interest in any of the remaining NFC South games this season.

Change may be on the way. While removing the automatic bid to the division winner doesn’t seem to be on the table, the league is looking at an expanded playoff format that would add an extra Wild Card spot in each conference. While a team could still win the division with a losing record, this format would help ensure that one more deserving team would make the playoffs.

This new format has a pretty good chance at passing this offseason and being put in place as early as the 2015 season. Not only is it a decent compromise to get better teams into the playoffs, but also it’s a potential gold mine for the league. Under this proposed format, only the #1 seed would get a first week bye and each conference would then have an extra Wild Card playoff game. Anything that results in additional playoff games is sure to be welcomed by league management as they look to capitalize on the NFL’s market dominance in North America.

In American football, the playoff picture is starting to materialize as the NFL heads into Week 11 of the season.  With only seven weeks of regular season games remaining, the contenders are beginning to separate themselves from the rest of the pack.

The NBA basketball season has begun with some surprises including a slow start from Lebron James and the Cavs.  We’ll preview a couple of marque NBA matches this week and also pay tribute to the amazing play of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins.

NFL Football

Sunday, Houston Texans (4-5) @ Cleveland Browns (6-3): The Cleveland Browns proved to everyone last week that they are for real by going on the road and dismantling the then 1st place Bengals 24-3. Cleveland now is sitting on top of the AFC North, this year’s best division in football.  With every team in their division having a winning record, every week almost needs to be looked at as a must win.  Their opponent, Houston, needs a win badly to stay in the AFC playoff picture.  Led by J.J. Watt, the Texans defense will need to play at their best in order to contain the Browns who will also be getting back last year’s top wide receiver as Josh Gordon is finally coming back to the Browns after serving a 10-game suspension.

Sunday, New England Patriots (7-2) @ Indianapolis Colts (6-3): If you are a fan of high-scoring games, this will be the one you want to watch this weekend.  Two of the three top offenses will meet up this week in a game that is sure to light up the scoreboard.  One factor that might limit the score is the fact that both teams were on their byes this past week so they will have 14 days to prepare for each other.  Regardless on whether or not it is a shootout, it should be a terrific game nonetheless.

NBA Basketball

Thursday, Sacramento Kings (5-2) @ Memphis Grizzlies (6-1): The Kings are perhaps the NBA biggest early season surprise.  While most expected them to improve, Sacramento is sitting at 5-2 in a very tough Western conference.  Led by Rudy Gay and Demarcus Cousins, the Kings take their show down South to Memphis to test their mettle at the 6-1 Grizzlies.

Saturday, Brooklyn Nets (4-2) @ Portland Trail Blazers (4-3):  In an inter-conference battle, Brooklyn flies cross-country to visit the Portland Trail Blazers.  This matchup, beyond the game itself, is always noted as a meeting between the Lopez brothers.  Brook Lopez plays center for Brooklyn while his brother Robin plays the same position in Portland.  It’s always fun watching those two brothers compete as if they were still in grade school.

NHL Hockey

The Pittsburgh Penguins are on an absolute tear right now after winning their last seven games.  They have real shot at creating some distance in the coming weeks with plenty of divisional games on the schedule.  This week, they face the following and look to improve upon that winning streak.

Tuesday, @ New York Rangers

Friday, vs. Maple Leaves

Saturday, @ New York Rangers

It slipped for Liverpool last season against Chelsea. On Saturday, the replay was on and again Mourinho prevailed. Emre Can gave Liverpool a hope early on after his strike was deflected into the net. Liverpool has been terrible at defending set pieces this season and conceded again against Chelsea as Cahill notched home a rebound. The Beast Diego Costa smashed in 2-1 and although Liverpool created some late chances and had a valiant appeal for a penalty, Chelsea won.

Andy Carroll returned for West Ham, but couldn’t find the net. Make sure you find the net with a Guts bonus sports now! The Hammers drew against Aston Villa who still can’t find the net. A clean sheet was nice for a change though. Manchester United struggled with Palace, but Juan Mata’s strike secured three points for the Red Devils.

At Turf Moor, Burnley secured their first win of the season after a signature Trippier cross and a thundering Barnes header. QPR almost had City. Almost. However, Sergio Aguero scored twice though and singlehandedly secured a point for a weak City. Southampton continued their good spell with another win-to-nil through two late goals from Shane Long. We expect Saints to beat Aston Villa in two weeks’ time, but can they upset the likes of City, Arsenal and Man Utd?

Sebastian Larsson curled in a free kick against Everton, but Leighton Baines converted a penalty to make it 1-1 at the Stadium of Light. Newcastle is in excellent form and beat West Brom 2-0 after a goal from Ayoze even Zlatan would be proud of. And poor Spurs lost at home to Stoke. Bojan with the play of the day at White Hart Lane with his 1-0 goal.

And lastly, Swansea’s subs came from behind to beat the mighty Gunners. Modou Barrow, note that name. The former Östersund player could prove to be an interesting addition for the Swans and his pace created the free kick that Gylfi Sigurdsson slotted into the top corner. Minutes after, Gomis headed home the winner. Next weekend, International break. We’ll e back!

October is drawing to a close and it’s been an arduous month indeed. Rooney’s suspension, Costas injury and Aguero’s inconsistency made business difficult for a lot of managers in our Guts Gaming Fantasy League. However, our top 3 for October scraped together plenty of points!

2. AR - Kamil Rukiewicz - 208 p

3. S Club 11 - James Currie - 198 p

Last week did not disappoint.  The World Series has been competitive with the Giants leading 3-2 in the best of seven series.  The NFL saw a handful of upsets, culminating with a Washington win over the heavily favored Dallas Cowboys on Monday night.  As for this week, it gets even better…

Major League Baseball

The San Francisco Giants are one win away from another World Series championship after winning the last two games at home.  The series now moves back to Kansas City where the Royals hope to even the series on Tuesday night during Game 6.  If Kansas City is able to win Tuesday, the final will be played on Wednesday evening.

NFL Football

Week 9 ushers in the second half of the NFL season.  From this point forward, the playoff picture will start to come in focus and every week these games have more meaning.  Let’s take a look at this week’s marque matchups:

Arizona Cardinals (6-1) @ Dallas Cowboys (6-2): The Arizona Cardinals have floated under the radar all season.  They play in a smaller market and don’t get a ton of national attention.  The Dallas Cowboys are the polar opposite – most fans would say they receive too much hype.  Regardless, there is no denying that both teams are playing good football right now.

Denver Broncos (6-1) @ New England Patriots (6-2): It doesn’t get much better than this - Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady in late October.  This game could very well be a preview of the AFC Championship Game.  These are the two best teams in the AFC and they have been improving each week.  It’s hard to see this game being anything other than fantastic.

Baltimore Ravens (5-3) @ Pittsburgh Steelers (5-3): The NFL’s biggest rivalry will pick up Sunday night in Pittsburgh.  In years past, we could always expect a grinding, low-scoring game.  However, that was then and this is now.  Both teams have tried to become more explosive on the offense and it shows.  Baltimore may be the better team but Pittsburgh is riding high after a big win and will be playing this game at home – it should be interesting.

NBA Basketball

The wait is finally over!  The NBA tips off Tuesday night and the first week should be great.  Back from injury, Kobe Bryant and his Lakers host the Houston Rockets on opening night.  Most other teams will play on Wednesday night with 12 games on the schedule including Bulls @ Knicks and Thunder @ Blazers.

Of course, almost every NBA fan is looking forward to Thursday night when the Cleveland Cavaliers and the trio of LeBron James, Kevin Love, and Kyrie Irving play their first regular season game together when the New York Knicks come to town.  In the preseason, Cleveland looked like they are going to do some damage in the Eastern Conference. Fortunately, we don’t have to wait long to see if this team is for real.  After the Thursday game versus New York, Cleveland plays at Chicago on Friday and then at Portland November 4th.  That’s some pretty good competition to start out the season.  Can’t wait!

Deep into stoppage time in yesterday’s big game Ivanovic got himself sent off and gave United one last chance to get something from the game. Robin van Persie smashed in the rebound from Fellaini’s header and the celebration was on.

It reminded us of a trademark Fergie-time finish and hopefully Man Utd can build on this 1 point. United had more attempts, more possession, more shots on goals, but Chelsea’s chances were bigger and one had the feeling that Chelsea was in control throughout the game. United’s shots came from difficult angles. A point apiece might arguably be the correct result to Sunday’s cracker.

At Boleyn Ground, West Ham continued their excellent start of the season beating reigning champions Manchester City 2-1. Hammers look like a top team and new signings Valencia and Sakho have been outstanding so far. City and especially Aguero were poor.

Saints upset Stoke 1-0 and are surprisingly just 4 points behind Chelsea. Sanchez scored twice as the Gunners defeated Sunderland to nil and Swansea produced two excellent attacks against Leicester, superbly finished off by Wilfred Bony. Crystal Palace looked to upset WBA, but a late penalty was converted by Berahino and gave the teams 1 point each.

Oh, were to begin with Liverpool. Home against Hull should be an easy 3 points, but Liverpool continues to struggle. Well, they looked decent defensively, but their offense seemed very tame. That all changed when Coutinho and Lambert came on after an hour, but despite big chances, Liverpool couldn’t find the net.

Things doesn’t look good at White Hart Lane either, as Newcastle spent a record 6 seconds after the second half kicked off before Sammy Ameobi hammered in the equalizer. Ayoze Perez made his debut for Toon and the young Spaniard headed home the winner after 58 minutes. Grim start to the season for Spurs, much like Everton. However, Etoo and Lukaku made sure that Everton took their second win of the season against Burnley, who still haven’t won in the Premier League.

Is there a better month for North American sports than October? Baseball’s final two teams compete in the World Series this week, NFL football is in full swing, NHL ice hockey just got underway, and the NBA basketball season starts next week! Let’s take a look at some of the biggest storylines and matchups this week…

Major League Baseball

Major League Baseball is down to its final two teams. The National League is represented by the San Francisco Giants (88-74). They will be battling against the American League’s Kansas City Royals (89-73). Game 1 is Tuesday night, followed by games on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (if necessary). This matchup is remarkable in that both of these teams entered the playoffs as the Wild Card team. Not since 2002 have two Wild Card teams met in the World Series. Both the Giants and Royals are playing some of their best baseball of the year so it should make for an interesting Series.

Kansas City hasn’t been to a World Series in decades and this team is playing with a lot of energy. However, will it be enough to counter the experience San Francisco brings to this series, as the Giants have played in the World Series three of the last four years?

NFL Football

Only two words for this last week: Peyton Manning. The Broncos quarterback broke the NFL career touchdown record by throwing his 509th touchdown and surpassing Brett Favre in the process. The most remarkable part of that record is that Favre threw 508 touchdowns in 309 games. Peyton broke his record last night in his 246th game. With Peyton looking like he could easily play a couple more years, could we witness the first ever 600-TD passer? It’s not a stretch when some call Peyton Manning the greatest NFL player ever. Manning, the league’s only 5-time MVP, continues to play at an unbelievably high level.

Week 8 in the NFL features some interesting matchups. The Seahawks (3-3) travel to Carolina to take on the Panthers (3-3-1) this Sunday. Both teams were disappointing last week and this game is hugely important for both teams. Neither team wants to go under .500 so expect a physical, hard-fought affair.

Also on Sunday, the Arizona Cardinals (5-1) will host the Philadelphia Eagles (5-1). These teams’ records speak for themselves. The Cardinals and Eagles match up fairly well against each other and that should make for an interesting game. Will Arizona’s top-notch defense be enough to contain the Eagles explosiveness? The pressure is going to be on as Arizona is trying to distance themselves from the other teams in their division, the NFC West, and the Eagles are attempting to keep pace within the NFL East as the surprising Dallas Cowboys sit in 1st place.

The Premiership returned with a boom this weekend, with Manchester City and Spurs kicking off a memorable weekend of football. 4 penalties, 2 penalties saved and 4 Aguero goals pretty much sums that one up. Spurs looked shaky, especially defensively.

Palace vs Chelsea produced a couple of great goals, a horrendous tackle by Azpilicueta and another 3 points for Mourinho. Costa did not participate and could well be out next weekend as well. Or is Mourinho playing mind games ahead of the clash against United?

Southampton has had a fantastic start this season and on Saturday Sunderland was dismantled 8-0. Vergini scored a spectacular own goal and played terribly the rest of the game as well. Dusan Tadic had an awesome game, scoring 1 and providing 4 assists. Saints currently holds the 3rd place in the Premiership.

West Ham and Everton picked up solid wins and even Alan Pardew got some breathing space with a 1-0 win against Leicester. Stoke won 2-1 against Swansea on Sunday having been wrongly awarded a penalty after a blatant dive from Victor Moses.

Hull almost upset Arsenal at the Emirates, but a late goal from Datguy Welbeck secured a point for the Gunners. And what an amazing finish the game on Sunday had! 4 goals in 8 minutes, a couple of own goals and utter despair for QPR who really deserved to get something from the game. Despite the 3 points, Liverpool needs to get things right sooner rather than later. Come Wednesday, Real Madrid will come to Anfield and Liverpool better step up their game. If not, Wednesday’s game could be very humiliating. Get ready for the game and grab the Guts sports promotion!

Hero Award: Sergio Aguero

4 goals could’ve easily been 6 or more for the magician against Spurs. He’s finally back in full force and constantly terrorized the Spurs defenders who had no answer to Aguero’s brilliant play.

Villain Award: Cesar Azpilicueta

Having kept Felipe Luis on the bench for the start of the season, Azpilicueta might have given Luis a free pass to take his place in the Chelsea team. A horrendous tackle right in front of the referee earned the defender a red card and a 3-match ban.

Team Award: Southampton

What can we say? 8-0 is a ridiculous score line and Saints have been very impressive so far this season. Could challenge for a European cup if they manage to keep up their excellent form. Stoke must be terrified ahead of next week’s clash.

Goal Award: Santiago Vergini

Easily one of the best own goals we’ve ever seen. The strike made us laugh so hard that we just have to give him an award.

Guts Gripe of the Weekend: Victor Moses

FFS! That was no penalty, that was a dive! Yellow card, ref! Stoke eventually gained 3 points from that. Very uncharacteristic of Stoke. On loan is he? Makes sense then.
