Premier League week 25: Why always him?

It was written in the stars. It was bound to happen. It was him. It was always going to be him.

Mario Balotelli, with his first Premier League goal for Liverpool, capped off a true spectacle at Anfield last night. After 82 minutes he showed up in the box and slotted home Lallana’s perfect low cross to break the deadlock. A fairytale ending to a magnificent night of football. Last night’s game was a huge one for Liverpool. They basically had to win to stay in the top four flight and the reds came out attacking. Daniel Sturridge had several good opportunities, but looked rusty in his finishing. However, he was a constant threat and after 15 minutes he laid off a long clearance to Lazar Markovic who in turn strolled through the Tottenham defense and scored a low shot across Hugo Lloris. On a better day, Lloris would’ve pushed that shot aside, but the goal stood.

Tottenham on their hand definitely came to play with a Hurri-Kane on fire. Spurs utilized Liverpool’s high pressure and embroidered themselves through after 26 minutes. And who else but ‘Arry finished off that class attack. 1-1 at Anfield. Sturridge’s cheeky back heel hit the post just before half time, but after the intermission, Liverpool were at it again. Flair youngster Jordan Ibe found Sturridge in the box and Ryan Mason fouled him. Penalty. Gerrard. 2-1 Liverpool.

However, Tottenham was not about to go down easy. First Lamela fired a cracker towards goal, forcing Mignolet to make a stunning save. The Belgian made another decent save from Christian Eriksen’s free kick minutes later, but could do nothing as Kane picked up the rebound and played in Dembele who scored. The appeals for offside was not to be heard and Spurs were level once again.

Sturridge was then brought off, Balotelli came on and the rest is, as they say, history. What a goal. What a game.
